Eday has a rich and vibrant history. Remnants
of the island’s industrious Past are present all
around and are evidence of a time when Eday’s
population was in excess of 900 people (about
7 times the
current level).
Peat cutting, salt extraction (from seawater), kelp
burning and fish curing are just some of the
activities that were introduced while the island
was inhabited by a succession of lairds. All of
these enterprises have left their mark on the
landscape, alongside those features pertaining
to the agricultural, spiritual and domestic
activities undertaken by many generations of
islanders up to the present day.
Walks on request are available every Friday
and routes can be tailored to suit your interest
and abiliy.
